T. gratilla are one of the few species of urchins which are edible and are actively sort out and even have be cultures in aquaculture farms.  Although they are a popular cuisine their numbers have remained consistent and through the use of aquaculture the wild populations of this species (Lawrence & Agatsuma 2007).  Although ocean acidification and temperature changes can pose a threat on this species but  global posing a threat on this particular species is not high. Due to their short generation times and rapid growth they are able to adapt to changes or move from the area before it begins to effect the species survival (Lawrence & Agatsuma 2007).
